About our Funding

Why fund the frontlines?

Fossil fuel expansion projects often succeed or fail based on the strength of support or opposition from local communities, landowners, and Tribal Nations. A survey of gas corporations found that local and environmental opposition groups were a top challenge to building out infrastructure. In addition to those projects being a matter of life or death for local communities, it’s also where many permitting and policy decisions are made.

Siting and permitting for oil and gas infrastructure disproportionately targets BIPOC communities. From Keystone XL to Standing Rock, these communities have proven that they can win David and Goliath battles. When they are connected to state and national strategies, movements and resources that can shift hearts, minds, law and policy; their potential is vast. We invite you to invest in their power.

How we Fund

We identify the most effective giving opportunities in the climate justice space.

We identify our grantee partners through a national network of allies, building trust and carefully evaluating needs while ensuring that funds go straight to those most directly impacted. This often requires unconventional investment and funding, like seed money, technical support, and rapid response grants. We aspire to the core tenets of Trust-Based Philanthropy–particularly unrestricted grants–which allows organizations to prioritize where to deploy grant dollars, enabling maximum flexibility, innovation, and impact.
